Specialized Training:
My approach to helping people through challenges is called narrative therapy. In psychotherapy it is a widely used approach that involves identifying, understanding, and reducing the influence of problems and developing new insights based on values, strengths and needs. This creates distance from problems and openings for new possibilities and preferences.
Personal Statement:
Loss and grief are highly personal experiences, yet it is common to encounter narrow ideas of how grief should be experienced and expressed. This can be the case for both death and non-death-types of loss that involve people, relationships, roles, and identities. Rather than trying to “move on” or “let go”, which doesn’t feel right for some people, there can be ways to live with and learn from loss. As a registered social worker and psychotherapist, I would like to be a witness to your grief and understand what your loss means to you. We can talk about your feelings in a space based on acceptance, respect, and curiosity.
