Specialized Training:
My training and current work is exclusively with children from infancy to age 12, and their families. I have worked within a large children’s mental health centre for 15 years, and within hospital settings as well. Earlier in my career, I also worked at Kids Help Phone and with women/children fleeing domestic violence. My MSW and undergraduate training had a strong clinical focus in children’s mental health. In the past 20 years of clinical practice, I’ve also attended numerous professional development trainings within various areas of children’s mental health as well. Please have a look at the Child and Family Therapy section within www.newrootstherapy.com (under ‘Psychotherapy and Counselling’), for services for children under the age of 12 and their families, as well as services for parents of infants and toddlers. The information listed in these sections are areas I work within, many for which I have also received specialized training.
Personal Statement:
I am passionate about my work as I believe strongly, and see the tremendous value, in early intervention - intervening earlier before challenges become even more entrenched in adolescence/adulthood. I work with children in the context of their family (i.e., parent-child work, family therapy, parent-only work, and/or individual child therapy as needed). I also do both in-person and virtual sessions. The format of sessions depends on the identified issues/concerns, as well the child's age and needs of course. Irrespective of format, parents/caregivers are always significantly involved in the work throughout the therapy process given the young age of this population. In addition, I utilize creative interventions and playful approaches to engage young children in the process of therapy. If I can answer other questions you might have, please feel free to schedule a complimentary Meet and Greet with me. I look forward to learning more about your child and family.
